Experiencing the Northern Lights is a dream for a lot of folks.

This mesmerizing sight is on the travel lists of many adventurers.

Where Indian Tourists Can Witness This

1)Nubra Valley(Ladakh)

Nubra Valley is perched over 10,000 feet high and boasts incredibly clear night skies.

It’s secluded and has less light pollution compared to Leh, so if a rare aurora dips to lower latitudes during a powerful solar storm, you might have a slightly better shot at seeing or snapping a photo of it here.

Best time to visit – Late September to February

2)Reykjavik (Iceland)

Iceland presents a fantastic blend of breathtaking landscapes (geysers, volcanoes, hot springs) and easy access to dark skies.

Reykjavik serves as a handy base, the best views are often just outside the city, in places like Thingvellir National Park.

Best time to visit – From September to April.

3)Hanle Dark Sky Reserve(Ladakh)

India’s first Dark Sky Reserve, Hanle, provides an unmatched high altitude, dry, and pollution-free environment, making it a paradise for stargazers.

Its location near the geomagnetic latitude, along with fantastic sky conditions, offers the best -though still quite remote – opportunity to witness auroral activity on the northern horizon during a strong geomagnetic storm.

Best time to visit – October to March.

Travel tip: Check out the Indian Astronomical Observatory while you’re there. Even if the aurora doesn’t show up, the views of the Milky Way are absolutely breathtaking.

4)Murmansk (Russia)

Being the largest city above the Arctic Circle, Murmansk is a budget-friendly choice for travelers coming from India.

It lies right beneath the auroral oval, providing a very high chance of witnessing the lights.

Best time to visit – Mid-September to mid-April.

Note – with the local midnight hours being the most favorable.

Keep in mind that viewing conditions depend on the weather.
