What happens if you decide not to board your flight after you’ve entered the international terminal?.

A guy shared his experience of being held up at an airport after he didn’t board a flight, even though he had a boarding pass.

He had only booked the ticket to accompany a friend who was traveling abroad. After saying goodbye to his friend, whose flight was set to leave later, he tried to leave the international terminal, thinking no one would notice. But things didn’t go as smoothly as he hoped.

Airport staff noticed him, took him to immigration, confiscated his phone, and questioned him as a possible security threat.

Officers looked at CCTV footage, checked flight manifests, and even confirmed details about his friend’s connecting flight.

After several hours and a bunch of interviews, he was finally let go with a written statement.

Here’s What People Should Know

1) If your boarding pass isn’t scanned at the gate, the airline marks you as a no-show. This could lead to the cancellation of your entire itinerary (including return or connecting flights).

Non-refundable ticket holders usually lose their fare and might only get a tax refund.

2) If you checked in luggage, the airline has to take your bags off the plane before it departs.

This is a necessary security measure. This can cause delays for the flight. Your bags can’t be on the plane without you.

3) Your passport will have an exit stamp without a matching arrival stamp. Immigration will need to reverse or cancel the exit.

You’ll be questioned and have to explain why you didn’t board. If you never went through immigration, this part doesn’t apply.

It’s against the law to do that, and anyone trying to pull such a stunt will definitely be detained.

4)Security staff might question your motives, just like they did with that Quora user.

You could be escorted out of the terminal. This procedure makes sure nothing shady was attempted.

5)Missing your flight doesn’t directly affect your visa or passport record. But, if you have an unmatched exit stamp (that isn’t canceled).

It could lead to:

Confusion during future immigration checks
Extra scrutiny when applying for visas or entering other countries

6)Depending on your ticket type – You might have to buy a new ticket. Some airlines let you rebook for a fee. Fully flexible tickets give you the most options.

If you don’t make it to the boarding gate, airline staff will look for you. If they can’t find you, your checked bags will be taken off the plane, and the flight will leave.

You’ll then need to find the airline staff to get your bags back.

Plus, you can’t leave the airport without an escort. You’ll be marked as a GNS (Gate No Show) and will likely lose most of your ticket value.

The airline isn’t responsible since you didn’t show up.
