Match Summary

Earlier, Ireland won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Batting first, Srilanka Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara started off steady, but soon found their rhythm, giving the team a quick start.

However, Mark Adair struck in the fourth over, taking Mishara’s wicket and delivering Sri Lanka their first shock of the night.

Kusal Mendis joined with Nissanka in the middle.Without losing any more wickets, Sri Lanka successfully navigated the powerplay thanks to the two right-handed batsmen.

Their partnership was progressing steadily and starting to look threatening. But it was George Dockrell who broke the partnership, creating a chance for Ireland to get back into the game.

Kamindu Mendis showed his intent and picked up the scoring pace, pushing the team total past 150.

Kusal Mendis batted until the end, finishing unbeaten on 56 from 43 balls.

Sri Lanka managed a respectable score of 163/6 in their 20 overs.

While chasing a target of 164 runs, Ireland struggled early in the chase.

Paul Stirling, the captain, had a decent beginning but got out quickly, making just 6 runs from 13 balls.

Ireland were 63 for 2 in about 9 overs, needing 101 more runs to reach the target of 164.

Harry Tector was the standout player for Ireland, making 33 runs from 27 balls, demonstrating a positive approach and effectively rotating the strike.

Lorcan Tucker contributed with 16 runs off 15 balls, playing a key role in stabilizing the innings after some early challenges.

Ireland remained quite competitive during the powerplay and middle overs, reaching approximately 94/2 by the 13th over, with Tector and Tucker batting sensibly.

However, they struggled to form a substantial partnership or to significantly increase their scoring rate to match the required pace – particularly as Sri Lanka’s bowlers tightened their grip during the middle and death overs.

In the middle overs, Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana controlled the chase and broke Ireland’s resistance.

Hasaranga pushed through, claiming three crucial wickets. Theekshana was outstanding as well, disrupting Ireland’s chase with three of his own wickets.

In the end, they were all out for 143 in 19.5 overs. Srilanka won by 20 runs.

Sri Lanka’s experience and discipline eventually carried them to a comfortable opening victory.
