From Tamil Nadu to the national stage, Kirti Chakra awardee Meenatchi Sundaram stands as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication—an inspiring hero whose actions continue to motivate millions.
Army Dream Turned Reality
Meenatchi Sundaram, a native of Kamayagoundanpatti near Cumbum in Theni district, nurtured a strong desire from a young age to join the Indian Army and serve the nation. Driven by determination and patriotism, he pursued his goal with dedication and was inducted into the Army in 2017.
Bravery Under Fire
On December 19, 2024, while participating in an anti-terror operation in Kulgam, South Kashmir, Meenatchi Sundaram and his fellow soldiers engaged in a fierce gun battle with five terrorists. During the intense encounter, he was struck by terrorist gunfire and sustained serious injuries.
The attack left Meenatchi Sundaram with severe injuries to his right shoulder and jaw. Despite these grave wounds, he remained steadfast, displaying the courage and commitment to duty that define a soldier dedicated to protecting the nation.
Despite sustaining such severe injuries, Meenatchi Sundaram refused to retreat from the battlefield. Wounds of this magnitude would ordinarily force most people to withdraw from combat, but he continued to stand his ground and carry out his mission.
However, he stood his ground and continued the operation without taking a single step back. His unwavering resolve reflected his commitment to duty and his determination to protect his fellow soldiers.
Suffering from intense pain and heavy blood loss, he continued to engage the terrorists. Although his injuries were life-threatening, he never lost sight of the mission.
His courage and perseverance played a crucial role in the successful neutralization of all five terrorists. Through his exceptional bravery, he made a significant contribution to the success of the operation.
Kirti Chakra Honour
Meenatchi Sundaram’s extraordinary act of bravery earned national recognition and widespread admiration.
In acknowledgment of his courage, the Government of India announced that he would be awarded the Kirti Chakra, the nation’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award.

The announcement was made on August 15, 2025, as part of the nation’s recognition of exceptional acts of valor.
Subsequently, on June 8, President Droupadi Murmu presented the Kirti Chakra to Meenatchi Sundaram at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The award was conferred in honor of his gallantry, reflecting the nation’s gratitude for his remarkable bravery and selfless service.
Hero’s Homecoming
After receiving the award, Meenatchi Sundaram returned to his native village, Kamayagoundanpatti.
He was accorded a grand welcome by former servicemen, villagers, schoolchildren, and well-wishers, who gathered to celebrate his achievement.
The reception featured traditional drum performances, fireworks, flower garlands, and ceremonial shawls, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the village.
As part of the celebrations, Meenatchi Sundaram was escorted through the village in a jubilant procession, with residents enthusiastically participating in the event.
The villagers expressed immense pride and joy that one of their own had been awarded the prestigious Kirti Chakra, one of India’s highest gallantry honors.
Warm Public Reception
As he passed through the village, members of the public greeted Meenatchi Sundaram with great warmth and admiration, congratulating him on his remarkable achievement.
Residents honored him with shawls and flower garlands, reflecting the community’s pride and appreciation for his gallantry and national recognition.
