Telegram creator Pavel Durov announced on Wednesday that xAI will pay Telegram 50% of any subscription purchases made through the messaging service as part of the one-year agreement.

In an effort to reach Telegram’s billions of users and strengthen its position in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence market, Elon Musk’s AI business xAI will pay the messaging service $300 million to integrate its Grok chatbot.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov stated in a post on X on Wednesday, the $300 million will be paid in cash and stock, and that xAI will also pay Telegram half of any subscription purchases made through the messaging app as part of the one-year agreement.

Only information openly shared by Telegram users with Grok through direct conversations will be accessible by xAI, according to Durov.

The agreement might give xAI, which bought X earlier this year, useful data for building and refining its AI models.

AI companies are finding it more difficult to find high-quality data as a result of the depletion of many open-source repositories. As a result, companies like Meta Platforms are turning to interactions between AI and the public for model training.

As per its privacy policy, X trains its AI models using user-generated public posts. Whether xAI will use Telegram data in a similar way was not immediately apparent.
