Whatsapp has started rolling out a new feature called “Channel Status,” allowing channel admins to share temporary updates directly within their channels on both Android and iOS.
The feature was first spotted during development a few months ago and is now gradually becoming available to select users through the latest app updates.
Users can access the feature by updating play.google.com and apps.apple.com.
With Channel Status, admins can post short-lived updates to engage followers more effectively, similar to the Stories-style format already popular across other social media platforms.
Quick 24-Hour Updates
According to WABetainfo, Channel Status allows admins to share photos, videos, layouts, and text updates directly from the channel interface.
The updates are designed to disappear automatically after 24 hours, similar to the Status and Stories features seen on other social media platforms.
This gives channel followers enough time to view the content, stay updated, and interact with posts before they vanish.
Temporary Channel Updates
This feature is designed to help channel owners quickly share important announcements and updates without creating a permanent post on the channel.
With Channel Status, admins can post short-term content that keeps followers informed in a more flexible and casual way.
Like other channel updates, these status posts can be viewed by anyone who has access to the channel’s content.
The feature also allows followers to easily share updates, helping channel posts reach a wider audience more quickly.
Easy Channel Updates
Channel Status updates will appear in the Status tray under the WhatsApp updates tab, right alongside regular status updates from contacts.
This makes it easier for followers to stay updated with their favorite channels without needing to open each channel separately.
To create a Channel Status update, admins simply need to open their channel and tap the create status option.
Admins can upload photos or videos, add captions, stickers, and other edits before publishing the update.
WhatsApp also allows admins to choose or switch the channel they want to post to before publishing, although updates can only be shared to one channel at a time.
More Ways To Engage
Whatsapp is also introducing new interaction options for users viewing Channel Status updates.
Followers can react to updates with likes, share them to their own status, or forward them directly to contacts. These features are aimed at making channel updates more interactive and easier to spread across the platform.

To avoid confusion with regular contact statuses, WhatsApp will display a dedicated “Channel Status” label at the top of the interface.
This label helps users instantly recognize that the update is coming from a channel rather than a personal contact.
Whatsapp is currently rolling out the Channel Status feature gradually, and it remains available only to a limited group of users on both iOS and Android.
The company is expected to expand the rollout to more users over the coming weeks as the feature becomes more widely available.
Expanding Channel Features
This rollout comes as Whatsapp continues to introduce new tools for Channels.
The platform has been steadily expanding Channel features to improve communication and user engagement.
WhatsApp’s one-to-many broadcasting feature was originally launched to help creators, businesses, and organizations connect with their followers more effectively.
With these updates, the company aims to make Channels a more interactive and useful space for sharing information and announcements.
