Chelsea Defeats Palmeiras In The Club World Cup

Chelsea netted the winning goal thanks to Malo Gusto’s shot in the 83rd minute, which found the back of the net after a couple of deflections, securing a 2-1 victory over Palmeiras on Friday night and earning a place in the Club World Cup semifinals.

Cole Palmer scored first for Chelsea in the 16th minute, but Estevao, an 18-year-old set to join Chelsea this summer, equalized with a well-placed shot in the 53rd minute.

Gusto took a shot right after a quick corner kick, which seemed to bounce off defender Agustin Giay and goalkeeper Weverton, sending the Chelsea fans among the 65,782 attendees into a wild celebration. FIFA officially marked it as an own goal by Weverton.

Chelsea’s next match isn’t too far away, as they’ll be up against Fluminense on Tuesday in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Hercules came off the bench and netted a goal in the 70th minute, helping Fluminense secure a 2-1 victory over Al Hilal in Friday’s earlier quarterfinal.

Thanks to Chelsea’s win, three out of the four semifinal teams will be from Europe, while one will represent Brazil.

The 23-year-old Palmer netted his first goal in the Club World Cup, proving why he’s regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders out there. He received a pass from Trevoh Chalobah and deftly slid the ball into the far post.

Fans showed up at Lincoln Financial Field during a holiday weekend that saw nearly 10,000 city workers in Philadelphia on strike, along with competition from an earlier Phillies game and a concert plus fireworks near the Philadelphia Museum of Art. FIFA had dropped ticket prices to as low as $11.15.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino was present at the game, which was the eighth of the tournament held at the home of the NFL Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tribute for Diogo Jota

There was a pregame tribute for Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, who tragically lost their lives after their Lamborghini crashed and caught fire in Spain.

Chelsea’s forward Liam Delap and defender Levi Colwill both picked up their second yellow cards in the tournament, meaning they’ll miss the semifinal. Chelsea also had to play without their captain, Reece James, who was taken out of the starting lineup because of an injury.

Estevao made a deal with Chelsea last summer that brought him to the club after he turned 18. He gathered with his future teammates including Palmer and got some nice postgame support.
