India finishes second on the penultimate day after winning three gold and one silver; Sachin and Yashvir make it to the javelin throw finals; the men’s 4×100-meter relay team is eliminated.

Gulveer Singh made history as just the second Indian to win gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m events at the Asian Athletics Championships. Meanwhile, high jumper Pooja earned the title of the youngest champion for India in this edition. On the second to last day of the competition in Gumi, South Korea, India secured three gold medals and one silver. This brings India’s total to eight gold medals-two more than in 2023-along with seven silver and three bronze.

Gulveer Singh

Gulveer finished with a time of 13:24.77, adding the 5K meter to his 10K meter gold from day one, just like Govindan Lakshmanan did back in 2017, completing his double. He conserved energy while remaining part of the five-member leader pack until the last lap, despite the hot and humid conditions. Gulveer then gradually picked up speed to create some space, and with a powerful kick in the final 200m, he surged ahead. Even though Kieran Tuntivate from Thailand and Nagiya Mori from Japan were pushing hard, Gulveer easily crossed the finish line well ahead of the competition. Abhishek Pal came in sixth with a time of 13:33.51.
