Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa achieved the status of India’s highest-ranked chess player in the live ratings following his victory at the UzChess Cup Masters 2025, held in Tashkent on Friday, June 27, 2025.

With this win, Praggnanandhaa’s live rating jumped to 2778.3, which puts him at World No. 4. A rise of three spots marking his highest career ranking.

The 19 year old jumped ahead of world champion D. Gukesh (2776.6) and Arjun Erigaisi (2775.7), who was India’s highest ranked player until Thursday (June 26, 2025) but has now dropped to World No. 6.

Magnus Carlsen (2839.2) is still holding the top spot, with Hikaru Nakamura (2807.0) and Fabiano Caruana (2784.2) right behind him.

On the final day, Praggnanandhaa was just a point shy of local favorite Nodirbek Abdusattorov and half a point behind Javokhir Sindarov. A key victory against Abdusattorov in the last round allowed him to catch up with both players, ending the round-robin stage at 5.5 points.

Erigaisi had a shot at creating a four-way tie but ended up drawing with Aravindh Chithambaram. During the first round of tiebreaks, which was a double round-robin blitz, all three players wrapped up with two points.

Abdusattorov and Sindarov both ended their games in a draw, while Praggnanandhaa won both of his games with white but lost when playing black.

In the second tiebreak, Praggnanandhaa drew against Abdusattorov with white and defeated Sindarov with black.

Sindarov’s victory against Abdusattorov confirmed the title for the Indian player.

This marked Praggnanandhaa’s third title of the year, following his successes at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament and the Grand Chess Tour Superbet Classic held in Romania.

He also secured the position of runner-up at the Stepan Avagyan Memorial earlier this month.
