There are several factors that contribute to their distinct looks, camouflage, mating, and protection. By merging with their environment, insects such as the orchid mantis can evade predators or become undetectable to their prey. Bright colors help creatures like the coastal peacock spider draw in potential mates. On the other hand, more flamboyant insects like the green milkweed locust flaunt their colors to signal that they are toxic or unpalatable.
Thorn Bug
The thorn bug is a frequent pest found in southern Florida, and it has evolved to resemble thorns quite closely. According to the University of Florida, these insects gather in large groups on stems and tree trunks, making them difficult for people to notice at first.

Rosy Maple Moth
Characterized by vibrant pinks, yellows, and purples reminiscent of a Starburst wrapper, the rosy maple moth ranks among the smallest moths, boasting a maximum wingspan of only two inches. While butterflies may be the most cherished winged insects, Kawahara points out that moths are equally fascinating.

Golden Tortoise Beetle
The golden tortoise beetle is spotted in most parts of the United States, resembling a small gold coin with clear edges. Interestingly, when they pass away, their shiny metallic luster disappears, revealing a dull red-yellow hue.

Orchid Mantis
Even though they look stunning and delicate, the small, flower-like orchid mantises are actually quite ruthless, using their camouflage to attract unsuspecting pollinators that they swiftly devour.

Gray’s Leaf Insect
These tropical critters blend in so well with plants that even we have a hard time finding them. These chill herbivores can come in green, yellow, orange, or red.

Picasso Bug
The Picasso bug, which gets its name for a reason, is an insect that resembles a stink bug. It flaunts its bright and unique patterns to signal to predators that they should keep their distance, according to a study from 2011.

Green Milkweed Locust
These locusts display their vibrant wings to deter predators and it’s quite effective, as they release a fluid from milkweed plants when they feel threatened.

Coastal Peacock Spider
The coastal peacock spider is all about style. Known from a bunch of viral videos, the male spiders show off an intricate dance to impress the females and similar to the bird they’re named after, their stunning colors are a big part of the attraction.
