Taking time to prepare for his sixth World Cup was a bigger priority for Cristiano Ronaldo than changing teams to participate in the Club World Cup.
“I received a few offers to participate in the (Club) World Cup, but I felt it wasn’t the right choice since I value getting proper rest and preparation. This season is going to be quite lengthy, especially with the World Cup happening at the end of it”, Ronaldo mentioned in an Instagram video shared by his Saudi Arabian team, Al Nassr, following his two-year contract extension.
“I want to be prepared not just for Al Nassr, but also for the national team”. The 40-year-old Ronaldo recently led Portugal to victory in the Nations League, clinching the trophy with a penalty shootout against Spain just three weeks ago, while rumors circulated about his potential transfer to another club for the ongoing Club World Cup in the United States.
He and his longtime rival from Argentina, Lionel Messi, might be the first players ever to compete in six World Cups at the tournament next year, which will be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Back in Qatar three years ago, Ronaldo made history as the first male player to score in five World Cups.
With his contract extension at Al Nassr, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is set to continue playing until he’s at least 42 years old.
