Seven time Wimbledon champ Novak Djokovic had to put in some effort after a solid start as he kicked off his quest for a 25th Grand Slam title, defeating unseeded French player Alexandre Muller with a score of 6-1 6-7(7) 6-2 6-2 to advance to the second round on Tuesday (July 1, 2025).

The sixth seed, looking to match Roger Federer’s record at the All England Club and surpass Margaret Court on the all-time major champions list, is set to face British wild card Dan Evans in the upcoming round.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t believe I had a shot”, Djokovic mentioned.

I believe I always have a shot. I’ve earned the right to think I can make it all the way to the title. Over the last ten years, I’ve probably had the most success in any Grand Slam.

It’s just the start of the tournament. There are a lot of amazing players in the mix. Next up, I’m facing a Brit, which is going to be a tough match, but I’m excited about it.

I’ve always felt that grass, especially in the latter part of my career, is the surface where I perform my best tennis, so why not do it again?.

Djokovic had a rough year but bounced back by winning his 100th tour-level trophy in Geneva, which set him up for a semi-final run at the French Open. He started strong against Muller, winning six games in a row to take the first set.

In the following set, Muller really stepped up his game, saving five breakpoints to keep it tied at 4-4. He then pushed it to a tiebreak, where he fought back from 2-5 down to level the match.

Djokovic took a moment to regroup when the Centre Court roof was closed and even called for a medical timeout early in the third set due to a stomach issue. He then managed to break Muller, who hit his sixth double fault of the match, putting Djokovic ahead 3-2.

After finishing the third set, Djokovic took a 4-2 lead in the fourth set with a stunning backhand winner, and from that point on, he never looked back, sealing the win by holding to love.

“I went from feeling on top of the world for a set and a half to my absolute worst for about 45 minutes”, Djokovic shared.

I’m not sure if it was a stomach bug or something else, but I really struggled with it. Thankfully, my energy returned after some miracle pills from the doctor.
