The Real Madrid star didn’t have to do a whole lot for his team to move past Juventus and into the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Gonzalo Garcia, who kicked off all four of Madrid’s games while Mbappe was sick, netted the winning goal with a header on Tuesday afternoon before being substituted out of the match.

Mbappe came on in the 68th minute during the 1-0 victory in the round of 16, engaging with the fans who were chanting his name before he took off his warmup suit. He was lively on the field and got a few passes from Vinicius Junior, even though he didn’t find the back of the net.

Before Real Madrid’s first match in the Club World Cup, Mbappe dealt with a stomach issue and had to be treated at a hospital. He missed all three group stage games while Madrid managed to win two and draw one.

In his absence, the 21-year-old Garcia stepped up and netted three goals, contributing to the score in every game of the tournament.

After coach Xabi Alonso mentioned on Monday that there was a chance Mbappe could make his much awaited Club World Cup debut, the French superstar showed up with the team a few hours before the match was about to kick off at Hard Rock Stadium.

He stepped onto the field prior to Tuesday’s game to a warm welcome from the fans in the drenched stadium that had experienced heavy rain all afternoon.

Mbappe comeback adds some star power to a tournament.
