Novak Djokovic dominated British wildcard Dan Evans in the second round of Wimbledon as he intensified his pursuit of a historic 25th Grand Slam title, while world number one Jannik Sinner advanced smoothly into the third round on Thursday.
Unfortunately, Jack Draper faced heartbreak as he was knocked out by former finalist Marin Cilic.
Djokovic managed to steer clear of joining the list of big names knocked out in the first week in south London, as the Serb took only one hour and 47 minutes to defeat Evans with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 on Centre Court.
“It means I’ve been playing for a really long time!”, Djokovic remarked after learning he had just achieved his 99th win at Wimbledon.
“I still love it. This court has given me a lot. Wimbledon holds a unique spot in my heart. Any history created here is definitely something special”.
Djokovic is hoping to cap off his amazing career by becoming the most successful singles player in tennis history.
The 38 year old has been level with Margaret Court at 24 Grand Slam titles ever since he clinched his latest major victory at the 2023 US Open.
Even though he lost the last two Wimbledon finals to Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic feels that the grass courts of south west London offer him the best opportunity to secure that sought after 25th major.
“I know there’s history at stake. I’m focused on the significant achievements I can accomplish in this tournament”, he mentioned.
Sinner hasn’t made it to a Wimbledon final yet, but the US and Australian Open champ has been on fire, losing only 12 games in his first two matches.
The Italian dominated Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic with a score of 6-1, 6-1, 6-3, setting up a third-round showdown with Spaniard Pedro Martinez.
“We’ve noticed a lot of surprises in this tournament, so we’re just trying to keep our focus and elevate our game”, Sinner mentioned.
Draper’s hopes of becoming a British champion like Andy Murray were crushed as 36 year old Cilic showed he still has it.
The Croatian, returning to Wimbledon for the first time in four years after significant knee surgery, smashed 53 winners in a 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win.
Only one of the top five seeds in the women’s draw, world number one Aryna Sabalenka is still in the game.
However, defending champion Barbora Krejcikova and 5 time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek managed to avoid being part of the big name casualties with their hard fought 3 set victories.
Krejcikova has had a tough time with injuries this year and came to Wimbledon having played just six matches in 2025.
Even though she wasn’t feeling at her best, she defeated American Caroline Dolehide 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, setting up a clash with Emma Navarro.
The ex world number one lost the opening set to American Caty McNally but came back strong to take the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
