Kylian Mbappe’s amazing bicycle kick was one of three goals scored during the stoppage time of the second half, leading Real Madrid to a 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in a Club World Cup quarterfinal.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a crucial save with his fingertips to deflect the potential equalizer on the last play of the game.

Gonzalo Garcia and Fran Garcia scored a goal within the first 20 minutes, giving Madrid a 2-0 advantage on Saturday.

Dortmund’s Maximilian Beier found the net just three minutes into stoppage time, and then Mbappe, who came on in the 67th minute, made it a two-goal lead again with a stunning bicycle kick just a minute after that.

Serhou Guirassy scored a penalty in the eighth minute of stoppage time after being fouled by Dean Huijsen, who got a red card and will be out for the semifinals.

Madrid moved on to face Champions League champion Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals on Wednesday (July 9, 2025), just a day after Chelsea plays against Brazilian team Fluminense.

On a bright afternoon with a temperature of 86 degrees (30 degrees Celsius) at the 3 pm kickoff, Gonzalo Garcia netted a goal in the 10th minute, followed by Fran García scoring in the 20th.

Gonzalo Garcia, just 21 years old and with only five appearances in the Spanish league over the last two seasons, was chosen to start by the new Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso instead of Mbappe, who is still working on his fitness after dealing with acute gastroenteritis. Garcia has scored four goals, putting him in a tie with Benfica’s Angel Di Maria and Al Hilal’s Marcos Leonardo for the top spot in the tournament.

Mbappe replaced Jude Bellingham, who unfortunately missed the chance to face his brother Jobe, as Jobe was suspended due to accumulating yellow cards.

Madrid triumphed over Dortmund with a score of 2-0 in the 2024 Champions League final, and they also made a stunning comeback from a two-goal halftime deficit to win 5-2 during this season’s league phase. Unfortunately, Los Blancos faced elimination at the hands of Arsenal in the quarterfinals of this year’s Champions League.

Madrid has achieved five consecutive victories against Dortmund and remains unbeaten in their last seven encounters since suffering a defeat in the 2014 Champions League quarterfinals.

American midfielder Gio Reyna did not make an appearance from the bench and concluded the tournament with a single 13-minute appearance for Dortmund across five matches.

This game attracted 76,611 fans to MetLife Stadium, which will host next year’s World Cup final. The seats appeared to be packed.

Before the kickoff, there was a moment of silence to honor Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva from Penafiel, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident on Thursday.
