Jannik Sinner, who came on after Swiatek on Court No. 1, managed to beat Ben Shelton 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4, even with some fancy bandaging on his right elbow, which he injured while playing against Grigor Dimitrov.
The Italian World No. 1 is heading to his fourth consecutive Major semifinal, facing off again against seven time Wimbledon champ Novak Djokovic, who got past a determined Flavio Cobolli, another Italian, with scores of 6-7(6), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.
“I wasn’t worried about whether I could play or not, but I was concerned about what my performance level would be”, Sinner mentioned later. “It turned out to be really good, so I’m pleased”.
On Wednesday, though, ignoring everything else, the Pole came back into the spotlight by making it to her first Wimbledon singles semifinal. On a scorching, stuffy afternoon, Swiatek defeated 19th seed Liudmila Samsonova with a score of 6-2, 7-5, giving herself more than just a little breathing space.
To secure a spot in the finals, she’s set to face Belinda Bencic, 28, on Thursday. Bencic recently defeated the young star and seventh seed Mirra Andreeva with scores of 7-6(3), 7-6(2). The Swiss player is a former top 10 competitor, an Olympic gold medalist from Paris 2020, and a mom to a one-year-old. This will also be her first time reaching the semifinals at SW19.
In the past few months, Iga Swiatek has mostly stayed out of the spotlight. This five time Major champion, now 24, isn’t the defending titleholder at any Grand Slam, hasn’t snagged a Tour level title since her win at Roland-Garros in 2024, and is currently seeded eighth at Wimbledon.
“Honestly, it feels amazing, and I got goosebumps after this win. I’m really happy and proud, and I hope this journey continues”, Swiatek expressed.
