Mitchell Starc achieved remarkable figures of six wickets for just nine runs, while Scott Boland secured a hat trick, leading Australia to dismiss the West Indies for a mere 27 runs. The second lowest score in the history of test cricket thus winning the third test by 176 runs on Monday, July 14, 2025.

The West Indies fell short of the lowest score in test cricket by just one run because of a misfield.

South Africa has been bowled out for their lowest totals in Test cricket on four occasions – three times against England and once against Australia.

Lowest Totals In Test Cricket History

1)New Zealand vs. England, Auckland, 1955

In this match in Auckland, New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat first. The Kiwis were all out for 200, with Brian Statham (4 for 28) and Bob Appleyard (3 for 38) being the standout bowlers. John Reid was the top scorer for New Zealand, hitting a solid 73. The Kiwi bowlers, led by Alex Moir (5 for 62), managed to limit England to 246 runs. However, in the second innings, England’s bowlers were exceptional, bowling out New Zealand for just 26 runs, with Bob Appleyard (4 for 7) and Brian Statham (3 for 9) doing the most damage. Bert Sutcliffe was the highest scorer for New Zealand in that innings with just 11 runs, and there were five ducks in the Kiwi second innings. England won the match by an innings and 20 runs, having bowled 27 overs to dismiss New Zealand for 26.

2)West Indies vs. Australia, Kingston, 2025

In this game, Australia won the toss and chose to bat first. Thanks to some solid bowling from West Indian Shamar Joseph (4 for 33), Justin Greaves (3 for 56), and Jayden Seales (3 for 59), Australia was all out for 225 in their first innings. In response, the West Indies struggled under pressure, facing some intense bowling from Scott Boland (3 for 34), Josh Hazlewood (2 for 32), and Pat Cummins (2 for 24), and they were bowled out for 143. With an 82-run lead, Australia was then dismissed for a mere 121, with Alzarri Joseph (5 for 27) and Shamari Joseph (4 for 34) leading the charge. Chasing a target of 204, the West Indies faced the wrath of Mitchell Starc (6 for 9) and Scott Boland (3 for 2), ending up with just 27 runs and seven ducks in their innings. Australia clinched the match by 176 runs. Starc’s first 15 deliveries marked the fastest 5 wicket haul in Test history, and it was his 15th five wicket innings in Tests. Boland also achieved a hat trick in this Test. Australia took only 14.3 overs to dismiss the West Indies.

3)South Africa vs. England, Gqeberha, 1896

South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first in this game. With Bonnor Middleton leading the charge (5 for 64), they bowled England out for 185. England’s bowlers were on point that day, sending South Africa packing for just 93 in their first innings. George Lohmann was the star of the show with his impressive 7 for 38. With a 92 run lead, England put up 226 in their second innings. When South Africa came in to chase a target of 319, they faced George Lohmann’s wrath once more. He took an astonishing 8 for 7, leaving South Africa reeling at just 30 runs. Overall, George Lohmann’s figures were a remarkable 15 for 45 in the match. England clinched victory by a whopping 288 runs.

4)South Africa vs. England, Birmingham, 1924

South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl first. England put up a huge score of 438, thanks to some outstanding performances from Jack Hobbs, Herbert Sutcliffe, Frank Woolley, and Patsy Hendren. On the South African side, George Parker took 6 wickets for 152 runs. South Africa faced a tough time with exceptional bowling from Arthur Gilligan, who took 6 for 7, and Maurice Tate, who grabbed 4 for 12, leading to their dismissal for just 30 runs in the first innings. None of the South African batsmen managed to score in double digits during that innings. However, in the second innings, South Africa improved their game. With a century from Bob Catterall (120), they scored 390 runs before getting out. Once again, Arthur Gilligan (5 for 83) and Maurice Tate (4 for 103) were the key wicket takers. England clinched the match by an innings and 18 runs.

5)India vs. Australia, Adelaide, 2020

India won the toss and chose to bat first. With solid contributions from Virat Kohli (74), Cheteshwar Pujara (43), and Ajinkya Rahane (42), India put up a total of 244 in their first innings. Mitchell Starc was impressive with figures of (4 for 53) while Pat Cummins chipped in with (3 for 48). The Indian bowlers, spearheaded by Ravichandran Ashwin (4 for 55), Umesh Yadav (3 for 40), and Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 52), managed to limit Australia to just 191 runs. With a lead of 53 runs, India seemed to have the advantage, but the Australian bowlers had other plans. A fiery performance from Josh Hazlewood (5 for 8) and Pat Cummins (4 for 21) saw India collapse for a mere 36 runs, with none of the batsmen reaching double digits. Chasing a target of 90 was a stroll in the park for the Australians, who wrapped up the Test match with a stylish 8 wicket victory.
