Nobody enjoys having unexpected visitors in their home, particularly the creepy-crawly types. However, many of us are unwittingly welcoming bugs without even knowing it.

What’s even worse is that some of the usual habits and oversights in our daily lives might be quietly inviting these pests in.

We all know that insects can sneak into our homes through cracks and crevices, as well as poorly sealed drains and pipes, but here are five lesser-known mistakes you might be making, along with tips on how to fix them.

Leaving Dirty Dishes Overnight

We’ve all had those nights when the idea of tackling the dishes seems like a huge chore, but leaving them until morning is basically rolling out the red carpet for bugs.

Food scraps, greasy leftovers, and standing water in the sink can lure in ants, cockroaches, and even fruit flies. You might wake up to a nasty smell the next day. It’s not just a cleanliness issue – pests are attracted to moisture and food bits. Try to make it a routine to rinse or wash your dishes before hitting the hay and give the sink area a good wipe down.

Messy Areas And Cardboard Containers

Bugs really dig spots that are dark, untouched, and not often cleaned, and messy corners or piles of cardboard boxes make for great hiding places.

Cockroaches, silverfish, spiders, and termites find refuge in these neglected areas. Cardboard, especially, holds onto moisture and is easy for pests to chew through or make a nest in.

Keeping things tidy, vacuuming behind your furniture, and switching to plastic bins instead of cardboard can really help keep the critters out of your home.

Too Much Water For House Plants

Even though your green buddies can liven up your place, giving them too much water can actually hurt them and your home. When there’s too much moisture in the soil or water pools in the trays under the pots, it creates a damp environment that pests like fungus gnats, mosquitoes, and even mould-loving bugs love.

To avoid this, only water your plants when they need it, make sure there’s good drainage, and regularly empty those saucers.

Ignoring Pet Food

Your beloved pet’s meals are designed for them, but pests find them just as appealing. Loaded with protein and nutrients, both dry kibble and wet food release strong aromas that draw in various bugs, such as ants, cockroaches, and even rodents. Leaving pet bowls out, whether inside or outside, can swiftly become an unintended feast for pests.

Even after your pet finishes eating, leftover crumbs or uneaten pieces attract unwanted visitors.

To prevent bugs, make sure to clean the bowls after each meal and keep food in airtight containers.
