Located in the Krishnagiri district, this spot is perfectly positioned on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border, making it an ideal choice to support not only Hosur’s growing industrial sector but also the southern and eastern neighborhoods of Bengaluru.
The Tamil Nadu government seems to have focused on Berigai-Bagalur, which is only 26.2 km from Bengaluru’s Attibele border, as the location for the long anticipated Hosur greenfield airport.
Why Berigai-Bagalur is a Smart Choice
The Berigai-Bagalur area, located northeast of Hosur, was chosen following an Obstacle Limitation Surface (OLS) survey that preferred it over Belagondapalli, which is where the private TAAL airport is situated.
The location of the site near the Tamil Nadu part of the Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) makes it more attractive, ensuring easy road access to important areas in Bengaluru such as Electronic City, Sarjapur, and Whitefield.
Who Gains In Bengaluru
- For those in Bengaluru who are fed up with the lengthy trip to Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli, the Hosur airport might provide a quicker option, particularly for residents in the southern region.
- IT parks and manufacturing facilities in Bommasandra, Jigani, and Attibele are likely to benefit from faster movement of cargo and passengers.
- Given Hosur’s industrial strength and Bengaluru’s tech focused export market, the airport could turn into an essential freight route.
Government planning to construct a top notch international airport for Hosur.
TIDCO is currently working on finding and securing land close to Hosur for the airport. Once this airport is up and running, it will set Hosur on a fresh course of development.
The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) along with the Krishnagiri district administration is currently working on the Land Development Plan (LDP), aiming for about 2,200 to 2,300 acres.
After it’s finalized, the plan will be submitted for administrative approval, and then a Government Order (GO) will be issued to start the land acquisition process.
Regulatory Challenges on the Horizon
Because the airport is close to Bengaluru, Tamil Nadu needs to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), which has exclusive rights in a 150 km area until 2033.
Moreover, since Krishnagiri’s airspace falls under Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), approval from the Defence Ministry is also necessary.
Interestingly, Fairfax Financial Holdings, which holds a majority stake in BIAL, has expressed interest in the airports at Hosur and Chennai.
If everything goes as planned, people in Bengaluru might soon have a second airport option just over the state line-one that’s more convenient, quicker, and designed to support the area’s industrial and tech growth.
Plus, we shouldn’t overlook that the Karnataka government is also gearing up to construct another airport in the Garden City.
