Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, marks the first day of the five day Diwali festival.
The term ‘Dhan’ means wealth, and ‘teras’ refers to the thirteenth day of the lunar calendar.
On this day, it’s considered lucky to buy gold and silver items, like jewelry and kitchenware.
This year, the celebration falls on October 18, which is a Saturday.
The Dhanteras Puja Muhurat starts at 07:29 PM and wraps up at 08:20 PM.
The Reason
On this day, Lord Dhanvantari appeared during the Samudra Manthan (the cosmic ocean churning), holding the sacred pot of nectar that grants immortality.
He is revered as the divine healer, and praying to him is thought to help ease ailments.
Devotees also ask for blessings from Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber, hoping for abundance and good luck.
How To Celebrate The Day
All over India, people celebrate Dhanteras by buying gold, silver, new vehicles, utensils, and household goods, as it’s believed to attract prosperity.
Homes are cleaned and adorned with rangoli and diyas, symbolizing the welcoming of Goddess Lakshmi.
Worship during the Pradosh Kaal is seen as very auspicious, ensuring lasting wealth and harmony in the home.
Another key ritual on this day is Yamadeepam – lighting a four-faced mustard oil lamp and placing it in the southwest corner of the house as an offering to Lord Yama, the god of death.
This practice is thought to protect family members from untimely death and keep negative energies at bay.
With devotion, lights, and prayers, Dhanteras kicks off the joyful celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights and prosperity.
