Max Verstappen is on a quest for perfection as he aims for his fifth F1 championship.
Following his impressive performance at the United States Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver believes anything is achievable.
“The opportunity is there. I find it thrilling, and I’m genuinely very excited for what’s to come”, Verstappen expressed after securing his third win in four races. “I think we have to be flawless until the end”.
In a season he once thought was nearly over, Verstappen is now chasing down the McLaren pair of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
When he hoisted the winner’s trophy on the podium Sunday, it was evident that Verstappen has taken control of this title race and isn’t planning to back down.
Verstappen’s recent strong performances have reduced his deficit to front runner Piastri from 104 points to just 40 in the span of four races. He is 26 points behind Norris.
With five races and two sprints remaining this season, it all kicks off this week at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, where Verstappen has celebrated five career wins.
Verstappen is on track to become just the fourth driver ever to snag five titles.
If he pulls it off, he’ll be in the same league as Michael Schumacher, the only other driver to win five consecutive championships.
McLaren has already clinched the constructors’ championship, thanks to their cars dominating early in the season and throughout the summer.
However, the momentum has clearly shifted towards Red Bull now, but McLaren still has a chance to turn it around.
Verstappen is aware that the McLaren drivers are still at the top of the championship standings and have some seriously fast cars.
“We caught up a lot.But at the same time, you know, the gaps (between cars) are very small”, Verstappen mentioned.
McLaren is keen to maintain a strong front, not wanting to show any signs of weakness that could let one of their drivers fall behind. Piastri, despite a tough weekend in Texas where he crashed during the sprint race and finished fifth in the main event, pointed out that he’s still leading the championship, even if the margin is getting tighter.
Piastri’s own errors have given Verstappen significant opportunities to capitalize. He crashed out on the first lap in Azerbaijan, where Verstappen took the win. His collision with Norris during the Texas sprint race allowed Verstappen to score maximum points that day.
In the five races since the summer break of the season, Verstappen’s total of 119 points has equaled the combined points of both McLaren cars.
Norris could mess up Verstappen’s title chase even if Piastri’s dreams go down the drain.
His second place finish in Texas brought him within 14 points of his teammate.
