At the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, South Africa lost the first T20 by 101 runs.

Indian won this game thanks to Hardik Pandya’s outstanding performance.

Match Summary

Earlier, Jansen was a tough nut to crack for India, as the Proteas put the hosts under pressure to seize early momentum.

Lungi Ngidi took full advantage of the pace-friendly red soil pitch, dismissing Shubman Gill and captain Suryakumar Yadav.

Abhishek and Tilak Varma understandably played it safe.

The former attempted to nudge the ball fine for four, but Jansen covered 11 meters in just five strides to pull off a stunning catch off Lutho Sipamla’s bowling, leaving Abhishek and the Indian fans in disbelief.

With three wickets down and the home crowd needed something special to get back into the game, and Tilak delivered.

He picked a slower ball from Anrich Nortje and smashed it over deep square leg, sending the ball soaring out of the stadium and into the night sky.

Just when it seemed like India was gaining some momentum, Jansen put a stop to it, sending Tilak back with a fantastic catch at deep fine leg, skillfully backtracking to grab the ball just inches from the boundary.

Pressure really brings out the best in Hardik, and India turned to him again. He hit two sixes off Maharaj, boosting the run rate and calming the nerves.

After losing Axar and Shivam Dube, Hardik and Jitesh managed to score 18 runs in the second-to-last over.

South Africa’s downfall highlighted Hardik’s half-century, with the all-rounder aiding India in bouncing back from a tricky situation to establish a target of 176 runs.

Arshdeep Singh made significant early breakthroughs with the new ball, his wide outswinger catching an edge from Quinton de Kock. Abhishek Sharma was quick to grab it at second slip.

Tristan Stubbs fell victim to an inside edge, as Arshdeep tricked him with a wobble seam delivery, leading to Jitesh Sharma taking a low catch – a well-executed review sent him back to the pavilion.

The introduction of spin only added to the visitors’ woes, with Axar Patel knocking back Aiden Markram’s leg stump and cranking up the noise levels.

After that, it was a steady march to the pavilion, as David Miller and Donovan Ferreira fell in back-to-back overs, leaving South Africa at five wickets down for just 50 runs.

In the end, South Africa was dismissed for their lowest score in this format – just 74 runs in 12.3 overs.

A googly from Varun Chakaravarthy then wrapped up Marco Jansen’s innings, while Jasprit Bumrah took out the dangerous Dewald Brevis and Keshav Maharaj, hitting the 100-wicket milestone in T20Is along the way, as India cleaned up the lower order to secure a solid victory.

Hardik gave a timeless, tenacious performance that helped India win handily.
