Denmark’s national postal service, PostNord, has halted the delivery of postal letters in the country starting Tuesday, December 30, 2025.
This unusual move likely makes Denmark the first nation globally to cease postal services.
According to PostNord, the volume of letters has plummeted by over 90% since 2000, as stated in a March 2025 announcement.
“We have served as the Danes’ postal service for 400 years, making this a tough decision to conclude that chapter of our history”, said Kim Pedersen, CEO of PostNord Denmark, in a news release.
“The Danes have increasingly gone digital, resulting in very few letters for us to manage today, and the decline is so evident that the letter market is no longer viable”.
The agency is also looking to enhance its operations by focusing on parcel services, given the significant rise in online shopping within the country.
As per the statement, the final day to send basic mail items like letters, business correspondence, direct mail, and magazine mail was December 18.
Additionally, the agency stopped accepting quick mail as of December 29, 2025.
International postal deliveries have also been suspended starting December 31.
Around 1,500 mailboxes across Denmark have been removed, and approximately 1,500 of PostNord’s 4,600 employees are set to be laid off.
