Aloka – A Story With A Tail
Aloka, he’s around 4 years old and probably an Indian Pariah dog.
The Indian Pariah Dog is considered one of the oldest landrace breeds, thought to have been present in the Indian subcontinent for about 15,000 years.
Genetic research places them among the first domesticated dogs, known for their resilience, intelligence, and adaptability to tropical climates.
Their ancestry predates the modern pedigree breeds that were introduced during the colonial era.
Pariah dogs have historically occupied a quiet yet respected role in Indian culture:
They have traditionally safe guarded communities, warned people of threats, and kept rodent numbers in check.
Indian folklore frequently portrays stray or native dogs as faithful guardians and spiritual guides.
Remarkable endurance, enabling them to traverse thousands of kilometers.
High intelligence and emotional awareness, allowing them to connect with monks on a spiritual journey.
Versatility, flourishing in diverse environments from Indian villages to American highways.
Natural disease resistance, a result of their evolution rather than selective breeding by humans.
Walk Of Peace
The Walk of Peace, organized by the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Centre, is a spiritual journey spanning 10 US states. It kicked off in Fort Worth in October 2025 and will wrap up in Washington, DC, this February.
The monks walk as a form of meditation, taking slow, mindful steps accompanied by chants of loving-kindness and moments to interact with local communities along the way.
This journey lasts between 110 and 120 days, centered on the values of non-violence, unity, and inner peace.
Aloka has emerged as both a participant and a symbol of this remarkable journey.
The monks express that his presence serves as a reminder that peace is a pursuit for all beings, not just humans.
