Australia won their opening match of the T20 World Cup by defeating Ireland by 67 runs.

Australia and Ireland faced off in the ICC Men’s World Cup 2026 on Wednesday (February 11, 2026), at R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Match Summary

Earlier, Australia won the toss and chose to bat first.

Aussie captain, Mitchell Marsh, missed the match because of an injury. Travis Head took over the leadership of the Australian team.

Batting first, Australia didn’t kick off their innings very well. Travis Head ended in the second over of the game.

After Head’s early exit, Cameron Green and Josh Inglis built a partnership that steadied the Aussie progress.

Australia gained some early momentum, reaching 64/2 during the power play.

Unfortunately, Cameron Green’s innings was cut short by a fantastic catch.

Josh Inglis scored 37 runs off 17 balls with an impressive strike rate. Right after the powerplay, Josh Inglis was out, thanks to a brilliant effort from Paul Stirling.

Losing the third wicket suddenly put the Aussies under pressure. It was hoped that Glenn Maxwell would rescue them from this situation.

However, his innings didn’t go well either, as Harry Tector managed to send him back to the dugout.

Marcus Stoinis and Matt Renshaw formed a solid partnership after Maxwell’s dismissal, helping Australia get back into the game.

Matt Renshaw scored 37  off 33 balls and Marcus Stoinis scored 45 off 29 balls.

After Renshaw was dismissed, Stoinis was left to guide Australia to a high score. But Ireland maintained their composure and quickly dismissed Stoinis, undermining the Australian finish.

Renshaw got out, leaving Stoinis with the responsibility of leading Australia to a strong total.

However, Ireland stayed focused and dismissed Stoinis soon.

Then Xavier Bartlett and Cooper Connolly stepped up, swinging their bats and pushing the team past the 180 mark.

Australia scored a solid total of 182 for 6 wickets in their 20 overs.

While chasing 183 runs, Ireland didn’t have the best start to their innings. A lot depended on their captain, Paul Stirling, but he ended up pulling a muscle while running after facing the first ball. He was in so much pain that he had to walk off the field.

Shortly after, they lost Harry Tector, Ross Adair, and Curtis Campher in quick succession, putting Ireland in a tough spot.

The wickets kept falling after that. The Australian spinners really put the Irish batters under pressure with their nearly flawless execution.

In the end, Ireland’s innings ended at 115, giving Australia a victory by 67 runs.

Adam Zampa’s spin was equally impressive; in his full 4 overs, he took 4 wickets for 23 runs.

As Australia’s best bowler, Nathan Ellis(Player of the match) had an incredible first spell, taking four wickets for just 12 runs in 3.5 overs.
