Now a new, strange creature has arrived: a “lucifer” bee with devilish horns.

This species, named Megachile (Hackeriapis) lucifer, was discovered in Western Australia, as announced by Curtin University on Tuesday (November 11, 2025).

Kit Prendergast from the university’s School of Molecular and Life Sciences stumbled upon this bee while checking out a critically endangered wildflower back in 2019, and she was instantly captivated by its unusual look.

Being a fan of the Netflix series “Lucifer”, she thought the name perfectly matched the bee’s strikingly devilish look.

“This is the first new addition to this bee group in over 20 years, which really highlights how much more life is out there waiting to be discovered”, Ms. Prendergast noted.

She hopes this discovery will help raise awareness of the numerous unidentified species that may still exist, particularly in regions at risk from mining activities.

“A lot of mining companies still don’t check for native bees, so we could be overlooking species that are yet to be described, including those vital for supporting endangered plants and ecosystems”, she added.

We may lose both without even realizing it if we don’t know what native bees are and what plants they depend on.
