India’s most aggressive military response to cross-border terrorism to date was Operation Sindoor, which began just after midnight on May 7. The Indian military carried out coordinated strikes deep inside Pakistan, targeting high-value terrorist infrastructure, after being prompted by the Pahalgam massacre, in which tourists were brutally killed in an execution-style murder.
It was a quick, multi-domain, and accurate response. The operational and symbolic centers of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, Bahawalpur and Muridke, were among the nine sites in Pakistan that India struck using stand-off weapons, such as long-range drones, loitering munitions, and air-launched cruise missiles.

India launched coordinated strikes against terrorist infrastructure deep inside Pakistan as part of Operation Sindoor, its assertive response to the Pahalgam massacre. In contrast to earlier measures, its goal was to cause material harm, weaken terrorist capabilities, and undermine Pakistan’s military-terrorist relationship. India’s strategic thinking has shifted toward regular, measured retaliation as a result of this operation, indicating a new normal in which military responses to terrorism are given priority.
Why It Is Important
The goal of Operation Sindoor was not deterrence or symbolism, in contrast to previous military responses like the 2019 Balakot airstrike or the 2016 Uri surgical strikes.
India did not merely retaliate; it escalated and won the round convincingly. The goal was to impose direct material cost-degrading terrorist capabilities and force Pakistan’s military-terrorist nexus to reconsider its operational latitude.
The Things,They Say
It is impossible for terrorists to sit and breathe in peace in Pakistan. On May 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at an Indian Air Force base, “We will go into their houses and kill them”.
Modi told US Vice President JD Vance that India would respond even more forcefully after learning of Pakistan’s intention to strike back.

Target selection:
India targeted the core of Pakistan’s terror network, targeting Bahawalpur and Muridke, which are not only military targets but also ideological hubs. India also targeted facilities in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir and at least one known Hizbul Mujahideen operational base.
Strategic Surprise
India executed the strikes precisely even though they were predicted. According to insiders who spoke to TOI, the government had a “I spoke to him, he did what he said”, moment-a promise fulfilled in plain sight.
Active Jointness
The Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force coordinated the operation, achieving a degree of interoperability that India has long sought.
