On Tuesday(January 27, 2026), Arijit Singh announced, “I’m calling it quits, it’s been an amazing ride”.
His fans were shocked to learn that he would not be taking on any new projects as a playback singer.
In a post on his social media, Arijit Singh mentioned that he’s decided to step back from playback singing, a decision that comes at the height of his career as one of the most sought-after voices in Hindi cinema.
“Hey everyone, Happy New Year! I just want to express my gratitude for all the love you’ve shown me over the years as listeners. I’m excited to share that I won’t be accepting any new assignments as a playback singer from now on. I’m calling it quits. It’s been a fantastic journey”, he wrote.
“God has truly been generous to me. I’m a fan of great music and in the future, I plan to learn more and do more as a small independent artist. Thanks again for all your support. I still have some pending commitments to wrap up, so you might see some releases this year. Just to clarify, I won’t stop making music”, he added.
The 38-year-old clarified that he will still create music independently and fulfill his current obligations.
Although Arijit Singh didn’t go into detail about why he made this decision, the news was met with disbelief, with many fans expressing their sadness in the comments.
Music Career
He began as a contestant on the reality show “Fame Gurukul” in 2005 and made his playback debut in 2011 with “Phir Mohabbat” from the Emraan Hashmi film “Murder 2”.
He hit the big time with the emotional hit “Tum Hi Ho” from “Aashiqui 2” in 2013. The success of that song turned him into a household name.
After that, Arijit Singh quickly became the go-to voice for all kinds of feelings, whether it was love, heartbreak, or joy.
Over the years, he has provided his voice for almost all of Hindi cinema’s top stars.
Arijit Singh has recorded tracks in various Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Marathi, and has worked with top composers and filmmakers.
He has received many awards for his music.
In July 2025, Arijit Singh surpassed global pop icons Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran to become the most followed artist on the music streaming service Spotify, boasting 151 million followers.
