YouTube is bringing back private messaging, allowing users to share videos and have one-on-one or group conversations without leaving the platform.

The feature is currently rolling out to users aged 18+ in the U.S. and select international markets, making it easier to discuss content directly where it’s watched.

Private Chats Return

YouTube is reintroducing private messaging, reviving a feature that was discontinued in 2019 as the platform shifted its focus toward public engagement tools.

The comeback follows a revamped messaging pilot launched in late 2025 to explore new ways for users to connect around content.

Testing revealed strong demand for a simpler, built-in way to share videos and chat without leaving YouTube.

The new experience aims to make content sharing more seamless, reducing the need to switch between multiple apps for conversations.

Safety First Messaging

YouTube’s new messaging system introduces stronger safeguards designed to reduce unwanted interactions and improve user safety.

Access to the feature is limited to users who verify they are 18 or older, adding an extra layer of protection.

Unlike the previous version, conversations can’t be started directly on the platform.

Instead, users must initiate chats through an invitation link shared via a third-party messaging app, helping keep interactions more controlled and intentional.

Invite-Only Connections

Users can access YouTube’s new messaging feature through the dedicated Messages icon located in the app’s top-right corner.

From there, they can generate and send invitation links to friends and family.

Once connected, users can share videos and discuss them directly within YouTube.

The invite-only setup keeps conversations limited to trusted contacts rather than open interactions with strangers.

This approach highlights YouTube’s focus on private content sharing and meaningful connections, not building a traditional social networking platform.

YouTube mentioned, “Our community loves to share videos with their friends and family, and we want them to be able to do it in one place”.

Sharing Without Switching

YouTube’s new messaging feature is built around how people already share content with friends and family.

Users frequently send music videos, tutorials, Shorts, and other clips through external messaging apps.

By bringing conversations directly onto YouTube, the platform aims to make sharing and discussing videos faster and more seamless.

Protected Conversations

YouTube says all private chats and shared content will remain subject to its existing community guidelines and moderation standards.

The platform will continue monitoring interactions to help maintain a safe user experience.

YouTube also plans to refine and expand the feature over time, using user feedback to guide future updates.

YouTube’s new private messaging feature makes sharing and chatting inside the app easier, safer, and more controlled, with age checks and invite-only access.

But will users actually switch from WhatsApp and other apps to chat on YouTube?
