On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, in Jakarta, Lakshya Sen withdrew from the Indonesia Open Super 1000 badminton competition after losing in the first round, while two-time Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu fought her way into the second round.

In the women’s singles, Sindhu defeated longtime rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 22-20, 21-23, 21-15 in an exciting match that lasted an hour and nineteen minutes.

Sen, who won a bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships, fought hard but ultimately lost to world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi from China with scores of 11-21, 22-20, and 15-21 in an exciting first round men’s singles match that went on for one hour and five minutes.

The 23-year-old Sen displayed incredible tenacity after missing a tournament in Malaysia due to a back issue last week. Sen rallied to force a decider after falling behind 11–17 in the second game. He saved a match point and won the match 22–20.

Shi regained control in the third game to win the match, but the momentum was short-lived.

In a game tainted by mistakes but full of game and match points, Sindhu and Okuhara fought each other in a fight of attrition.

With attacking strokes at crucial times and a game point saved, Sindhu won a difficult opening match 22–20.

In the second game, Sindhu led by just two points at the beginning but fell behind 7–11 in the middle of the game. She fought her way back and scored a loud cross-court smash to secure two match points. However, unintentional mistakes kept coming in, letting Okuhara equalize the score at 20-20. In the end, the Japanese won the second game 23–21.

Neither player took any unnecessary chances, and the decider fell into a well-known pattern of cautious play. After taking an 11-9 lead at the half, Sindhu settled into a rhythm and burst out with a string of victories to take the lead to 20-12.

Sindhu gained eight match points, and secure her place in the round of 16.
