India will have to select a new full-time captain almost immediately following the conclusion of the 2025 Indian Premier League, since Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect. India’s five-Test series in England is set to start on June 20 at Headingley.

“Hi there, everybody I would want to announce that I will no longer be playing Test cricket. Being able to represent my nation in white has been an absolute honor. I appreciate all of your support and affection over the years. I’ll keep playing in the ODI format for India”,said Rohit. Following India’s victory in the T20 World Cup last year while he was captain, Rohit announced his retirement from T20Is in a social media post on Wednesday night.
Despite the recent disappointing performance, Rohit leaves with 4301 runs in 67 Test matches, averaging 40.57. Over the years, he has amassed 12 hundreds and 18 half-centuries, with a best of 212 against South Africa in Ranchi in October 2019.

When asked about the future of senior players Rohit and Virat Kohli, India’s head coach for all three international formats, Gautam Gambhir, responded, “They should be a part of the team until they are performing.” It is up to you to decide when to begin and when to finish. You cannot be told when to quit by a coach, selector, or BCCI. If you perform, why quit at forty? You may play until forty-five, and who’s stopping you?”
Rohit’s decision follows a disastrous tour of Australia in December 2024 and January 2025, during which he averaged 10.93 from eight Test matches and only once reached 50, as well as a lackluster home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand late last year. Despite winning both Test matches against Bangladesh, India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia 3-1 after being swept 3-0 by New Zealand under Rohit’s leadership.
Jasprit Bumrah, who is currently India’s designated vice-captain, led in the first and last Tests in Australia while Rohit was away.During the Australian trip, Rohit missed the first and last Test matches. He was at home in India for the birth of his child in the first place, and he “stood down” in Sydney in the last match. He had made it clear at the time that his decision was not a “retirement decision,” but rather a simple response to his bad batting performance.

Rohit had stated in an interview with Star Sports during the Test match, “Since I’m not hitting runs, I decided to sit out this game”. There is no assurance that runs won’t occur in the next five or two months. Cricket has taught me that life is changing every single second, minute, and day.
Although ,” I have faith in my ability to change things, I also need to be practical. Therefore, what people write or say with a microphone, pen, or laptop won’t affect life. They are unable to determine when should we sit out or retire? I’m a responsible, grown-up father of two kids. I therefore understand what I need in life”.
“I am a sensible, mature man with two children, so I know what I need in life. I am confident that things can change, but I also have to be realistic. Therefore, what people with a microphone, pen, or laptop write or say won’t change life. They are unable to determine when we should captain, when we should retire, or when we should sit out”.

Before India’s tour of England in May 2025, he declared his retirement from Test cricket.Fans miss him so much in Test cricket. But they will be happy to see him in ODI cricket format.
