As summer break neared its end, Idukki’s booming tourism scene suddenly came to a halt. The unanticipated arrival of the monsoon, along with Red and Orange alerts from the district authorities, led to the shutdown of key tourist attractions like Munnar, causing a flurry of cancellations. Those involved say reservations were made up until June 10, but the abrupt change in weather caught both visitors and businesses off guard.

According to Jithesh Jose, secretary of the District Tourism Promotion (DTPC), who confirmed the current trend, “Normally, the number of tourists arriving during the summer vacation will continue till June 10; the school in Tamil Nadu opens on June 10 and a large number of tourists arrive from Tamil Nadu to Idukki in the last week of May and the first week of June. However, tourism operations were halted following alerts from the district administration, which resulted in fewer visitors to the area”, Mr. Jose reported.

Mr. Jose additionally stated that the typical number of tourists visiting Wagamon Adventure Park exceeded 9,000 individuals daily. “However, following the suspension of adventure tourism activities, the number of tourist arrivals fell to under 1,000 per day. The Glass Bridge in Wagamon serves as the primary tourist attraction in the district”, remarked Mr. Jose.

Following the influx of tourists to the area, the business community is also encountering difficulties. Tourism stakeholders say that because the district experienced a lot of rain, they are getting a lot of cancellations.

“Up until May 25, Munnar hill station was packed with visitors, causing long traffic jams on the roads leading to it. However, once the monsoon rains started and alerts were issued, the town became quite empty. The early onset of the monsoon has a negative impact on local businesses. Typically, tourist visits would last until June 30. Munnar town relies heavily on tourist spending”, shared a vendor in Munnar.

In the meantime, the collector of Idukki district, V. Vigneshwari, has put some restrictions on tourism in the area. Officials have announced that all water activities, trekking, and adventure tourism will be on hold due to a heavy rain alert expected in the next few days. The order mentioned that tourism activities in the district will remain suspended until further notice. Additionally, the district administration has enforced a night travel ban on the Gap road section of the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway starting May 30.
