India’s top men’s doubles team, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, defeated world No. 1 Malaysian pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin in straight games in the Super 750 badminton tournament on Friday, 21-17, 21-15, to advance to the Singapore Open semifinals.
During their 39-minute quarterfinal victory, the Indian duo, who had recently struggled with fitness, displayed outstanding defensive abilities and court control.
This is their third time reaching the semifinals this season, after achieving similar success at the Malaysia and India Open earlier this year.
The game started with service errors during the initial points and showcased fast exchanges as both teams concentrated on angled returns and aggressive gameplay.
Satwik dominated the serve and third shot as the Indians had a three-point lead at halftime, but the score stayed tied from 1-1 to 7-7.
The Indians kept their lead at 15-11 until Satwik made a service error and Izzuddin’s jump smash closed the gap to 13-15.
India’s lead was increased to 18-15 by Satwik’s forceful forehand smash. Chirag’s straight smash and Izzuddin’s wide shot gave them three game points.
When Goh hit a serve return into the net, the Indians won the opening game.
Chirag made some early mistakes in the second game, but the Indians kept the score tied at 6-6 by matching their opponents in quick-paced exchanges.
After that, the Indian duo scored four points in a row before making an unforced mistake. At the half, India had a four-point lead thanks to a body shot by Chirag that pushed Izzuddin into a net error.
They increased their lead to 15-9 after the break thanks to a deft backhand near the net. With Satwik’s forceful smash, the score increased to 16–10.
They gained five match points with to Satwik’s impressive comeback, despite a few unforced mistakes.
The win was confirmed after yet another mistake from their Malaysian rivals, ensuring their spot in the semifinals of the Singapore Open.
