A Victory against PBKS will end RCB’s 18-year wait for a historic IPL title, granting Patidar cult status during his debut as captain. The Bengaluru-based team has been incredibly dominant this season, pulling off impressive wins; none of the clumsiness that characterized RCB in previous editions has been evident, making Patidar seem like a messiah sent by the divine forces. Rajat Patidar is just one game away from immortality in cricketing legend.

According to Chandrakant Pandit, the head coach of the state squad, the cricket player, who currently leads Madhya Pradesh in limited-overs cricket, initially lacked confidence as a captain.

According to media source Pandit stated, “Given the respect he has earned from the players, I had been pursuing him to be the captain of the state team for the past two to three years. At first, though, he wasn’t very interested; I don’t think he thought he was a good captain. Rajat was a man who didn’t talk much, so it was difficult to understand what he was thinking”.

“Rajat, on the other hand, approached me last season and expressed his desire to assume the role of captain. His ability to make wise decisions and develop into a leader became clear to me when I interacted with him during the off-season. MP reached the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali (SMAT) 2024–25 after performing admirably as captain. Under his leadership, the team began to win games, which boosted Rajat’s confidence. Andy Flower, the head coach of the RCB, spoke with me during the SMAT. He was extremely anxious to know what’s so exceptional about Rajat”, remarked the KKR head coach.

From few opportunities to being sidelined by ailments all the time, the RCB skipper has seen his share of hardship and tragedy over the years. According to Pandit, Patidar’s mindset and eagerness to pick things up fast were key components in his swift development and success.

“Rajat acts fearlessly when making decisions. However, he is also conscious of the flaws in his decision-making, as I observed during SMAT 2024–2025. Rajat told me, “I should’ve done this instead”, as soon as he realized he had missed some things. Acceptance is crucial”, Pandit stated.

He further said, “On a few occasions, he was removed after making a poor shot. Even though I was angry with him, he handled it well and didn’t say a word. In the following game, you could see the difference. Perhaps other cricket players would have referred to the poor shot as a component of the game. Rajat, on the other hand, is an excellent learner and used the lessons learned from the encounter”.

The head coach of KKR brought up a recent chat with Patidar prior to an IPL 2025 game against RCB in Bengaluru, highlighting his resilient mindset.

Rajat had been hurt on the finger. ‘What has happened to your finger?’ I questioned (Pandit). But don’t worry, he said. I’ll be performing. He likes that degree of self-assurance and mental toughness. Another sign of Rajat’s self-confidence as a captain is his ability to speak up and express himself freely.

Devendra Bundela, a former captain of Madhya Pradesh, called Patidar’s leadership of RCB in the IPL 2025 final a turning point in his career.

“I thought RCB would do well, but making it to the final is a huge accomplishment and a significant turning point in Rajat’s career. Rajat’s ability to shift the course of major matches gives RCB an advantage over PBKS. I would support him to receive another significant knock after he scored an incredible 81(40) against Mumbai in the SMAT 2024–25 final. On his day, Rajat is absolutely unbeatable. He is a perfect example of how players who work hard in domestic cricket develop their tactical awareness and mental toughness”, said Bundela.
