In Stavanger, Magnus Carlsen won his seventh Norway Chess title, breaking the previous record, following a thrilling final-round match in which Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh was defeated by Fabiano Caruana. With 16 points, Carlsen, the reigning champion, defeated Gukesh (14.5) and Caruana (15.5) in the fiercely contested event.
When he met 2018 winner Caruana in his final match, Gukesh, who had been vying for the title, was under tremendous pressure. Even though the 17-year-old Indian made an effort to rally late from a challenging position, his clock ran out.
Gukesh’s chances of winning his first Norway Chess title were abruptly destroyed when, with just two seconds left, he put out his hand in resignation and then covered his face in obvious frustration.
In the meantime, Carlsen sealed the title by drawing his match against Arjun Erigaisi in the final round after being in a bad position.
Erigaisi concluded his campaign in fifth position with 12.5 points, while Gukesh finished third for the second time in as many outings at the prestigious event. Anna Muzychuk of Ukraine won the women’s division with 16.5 points, even though she lost to R Vaishali of India in the Armageddon tie-break in the last round. Muzychuk had already won the title in the traditional game.
To win the championship, India’s Koneru Humpy needed Muzychuk to lose in the traditional format and win her own match in the final round. However, she was only able to tie with Chinese world champion Ju Wenjun. Humpy scored 15 points to finish third.
