Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla from India, along with the rest of the crew for the Axiom-4 mission (Ax-4), is gearing up for a launch from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) on June 10. They are expected to dock with the International Space Station (ISS) a few hours later on June 11.

“The crew is set to arrive at the space station on June 11 around 12:30 PM Eastern Time”, according to Axiom Space. The launch that was originally planned for June 8 has been moved to June 10. “This change gives Nasa, SpaceX, and Axiom teams time to prepare for expected bad weather during the transport of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft, as well as to finish up the final processing of the spacecraft before launch”, Nasa mentioned regarding the June 10 launch.

Peggy Whitson, a former NASA astronaut and the director of human spaceflight at Axiom Space, will lead the mission, while Isro astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla will act as the pilot. The two mission specialists include Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland, an astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), and Tibor Kapu from Hungary.

According to the timelines that both NASA and Axiom have publicly announced, the current disagreement between SpaceX founder Elon Musk and US President Donald Trump – a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is set to launch the Ax-4 crew aboard a SpaceX Dragon – is improbable to affect this specific mission.

The Ax-4 mission will represent SpaceX’s 53rd Dragon mission, the 15th human spaceflight mission to the ISS, and the 48th journey to the station, encompassing both crewed and cargo missions.

Shukla, one of the four astronaut-designates involved in India’s Gaganyaan programme, participated in Ax-4 as a result of a collaborative effort between Isro and Nasa, which was revealed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his official trip to the United States in 2023.

India has currently invested a minimum of Rs 548 crore in the mission. Besides the launch costs, this amount also covers the training of Shukla and his backup, Group Captain Prashanth Nair, who is also a designated Gaganyaan astronaut.

Upon his arrival at the ISS, Shukla is set to perform seven experiments created by Indian academic institutions, along with five more experiments in collaboration with NASA, as confirmed by Dana Weigel, the manager of the ISS Programme at NASA.

In response to this, Sudeesh Balan, the project director at Isro, previously stated: “The seven experiments we announced earlier are primarily biological and were suggested by Indian scientists. Shukla will be in charge of these. Additionally, there will be five experiments in collaboration with Nasa focused on human research programs. Shukla will also take part in those”.

The SpaceX Dragon designated for Ax-4 is going to be a “completely new spacecraft,” as confirmed by Sarah Walker, SpaceX’s director of Dragon mission management. She also mentioned that the crew will give it a nickname. Last week, Ax-4 commander Whitson stated that the new name will be revealed shortly.
