Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is prepared to launch Axiom-4 on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., making him the second Indian in space. He will conduct research on whether or people with diabetes are not eligible to travel to space, during his 14-day stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The effects of floating in microgravity will be changing his own physique.
A unique challenge to the human body is space travel, which currently includes orbital missions with private civilians. Almost every physiological system is impacted when gravity is absent.

The Effect Of Space On Human Health
We have learned a great deal about the short-term and long-term effects of space on astronauts’ health since Yuri Gagarin’s 1961 space flight.
Space Sickness
Headaches, nausea, and vomiting are among the symptoms of space sickness that astronauts experience after entering the microgravity environment of outer space. This occurs as a result of the brain becoming confused with the inner ear’s knowledge about acceleration and gravity, which is crucial for preserving equilibrium on Earth. This is short-lived since the brain adjusts to the new information within a few days. They must re-adjust when they return to Earth, and at first they may have trouble standing, walking, turning, or maintaining eye contact.
Fluid Buildup
Face swelling is another common symptom that astronauts may encounter during their first few days in space. This occurs as a result of all the biological fluids that gravity pulls down to the lower body rushing to the higher body. However, Some days, the fluid distribution evens out.
Astronauts may feel lightheaded while standing up after returning to Earth because gravity forces the heart to work harder to pump blood to the brain.
Bone And Muscles
Astronauts begin to lose bone and muscle mass when they are in space since they are not required to bear the weight of their bodies. Particularly in the lower body, such as the legs, hips, and spine, this reduction in load-bearing capacity may lead to a decline in bone density. Additionally, it raises the mineral content in other parts of the body, which increases the danger of stones. When they return to Earth, their diminished physical power may cause them to tumble.
Eyes
The eyes undergo a number of changes when in space, including the globe flattening and swelling where the retina and optic nerve meet. Space Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome is the name given to these alterations in the structures of the brain and eye; it has no analog on Earth. Nearly 70% of astronauts on the space station experience this, and the effects get worse with prolonged stays. It is believed that the fluids’ upward movement is the cause.
Heart
Long-term stays in space may cause the heart to shrink since the body doesn’t need the heart to pump as hard. Upon returning to Earth, the weaker, smaller heart can exert itself excessively. The aerobic capacity and blood volume of astronauts decrease, and they are more likely to have arrhythmias, or abnormal heartbeats. The radiation from space also affects blood vessel lining, which can cause or hasten heart disease.
What Kind Of Diabetes Research Will Shubhanshu , His Crew Members Be Doing
Because diabetes is becoming more common on Earth, one of the Axiom-4 trials will look at whether those who need frequent insulin shots can choose to travel to space. These people are currently ineligible.
Blood sugar level monitoring will be the main focus of the current experiment, even though the Galactic 07 sub-orbital trip last year demonstrated that widely available insulin pens can deliver insulin efficiently. Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) will be used in the experiment to see whether there is a way to measure blood sugar levels accurately while in space. The effectiveness of insulin exposed to space will also be evaluated.
Why Is It Important To Research Human Health In Space
Research on human health in space can assist researchers in creating more comfortable spacesuits, improved dietary and exercise recommendations, and strategies to sustain a regular sleep-wake cycle. It is crucial because several nations are considering long-term space travel to planets like Mars as well as a permanent presence in space. By 2035, India intends to establish its own space station, known as Bharatiya Antariksh Station, and by 2040, it hopes to send a man to the moon.
