These little creatures might be the size of a dime, yet they are the toughest to protect.

Elf Owl

Recognized as the smallest owl species, elf owls can be found in southern America and Mexico. They measure around 14 cm long, which is about the size of a sparrow, and they cleverly use woodpecker holes for their homes.

Barbados Threadsnake

Recognized as the tiniest snake species, the Barbados thread snakes typically measure around 10 cm long. Hedges, the guy who first classified these little reptiles as a distinct species, described them as being ‘about as wide as a spaghetti noodle’. They mainly eat termites and ant larvae and can be spotted in the Caribbean islands of Barbados and Anguilla.

Bumblebee Bat

The bumblebee bat holds the title of the smallest mammal on the planet. Known as the hog nosed bat because of its pig like snout and big ears, this little creature is native to Thailand and Myanmar, where it makes its home in limestone caves. These tiny bats measure only 1.1 to 1.3 inches long and weigh around 0.21 ounces. As reported by Discover magazine, their numbers are decreasing because of deforestation.

Dwarf Gecko

Dwarf geckos, which are tiny lizards found in the woodlands of southern and central Africa, can grow up to 43mm from snout to vent. They have these cool adhesive toe pads and are often spotted in trees, on rocks, and even in buildings, munching on insects.

Bee Humming Bird

The bee hummingbird, which is the tiniest bird and the smallest warm-blooded vertebrate, measures just 5.5 cm in length and weighs around 1.95 g. These little guys are native to Cuba and primarily feed on nectar, often being mistaken for bees because of their size, which is how they got their name.

Paedophryne Amauensis

Paedophryne amauensis holds the title for the tiniest amphibian, known by its scientific name. These intriguing little guys measure around a third of an inch, which is even smaller than a housefly! They are the smallest vertebrates found in the tropical rainforests of Papua New Guinea. Their diet probably consists of tiny invertebrates such as mites and small insects.
