This week, U.S. President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order that will extend the deadline for TikTok’s Chinese Owner to sell off the widely-used video sharing app, as stated by the White House on Tuesday.

In early April, Mr. Trump signed an order to extend TikTok’s running for another 75 days while possible sale of the app to American owners was temporarily halted.

“As President Trump has mentioned repeatedly, he doesn’t want TikTok to shut down”, stated White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. “This extension will be in effect for 90 days, during which the Administration will focus on finalizing this deal, ensuring that Americans can keep using TikTok with confidence that their data remains safe and secure”.

Mr. Trump mentioned to reporters on Air Force One while heading back to Washington early Tuesday from the G7 summit in Canada that he would likely extend the deadline once more.

Mr. Trump mentioned that he believes Chinese President Xi Jinping will “eventually give the green light” for a deal to sell off TikTok’s business in the U.S.

This will mark the third time that Mr. Trump has extended the deadline.

The first time was an executive order issued on January 20, which was his first day in office. This came after the platform went dark for a short time when the ban, approved by Congress and upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, was enforced.

In April, there was a second time when officials at the White House thought they were close to finalizing a deal to create a new company for TikTok with U.S.However, this plan collapsed after China withdrew its support in response to Trump’s tariff announcement.

It’s uncertain how many times Trump keep prolonging the ban while the government keeps trying to work out a deal for TikTok, which is owned by China’s ByteDance. Since joining TikTok last year, Mr. Trump has gained over 15 million followers and has credited the popular platform for helping him connect with younger voters. He mentioned in January that he has a “warm spot for TikTok”.
