Botafogo shocked Champions League champs Paris Saint-Germain with a 1-0 victory on Thursday night during both teams’ second game in the Club World Cup.

Igor Jesus found the net just before halftime, and the South American champs held on through a nail-biting second half, putting them at the top of the group with a 2-0-0 record.

PSG hadn’t faced defeat in any match since May 3, but the European champions seemed a bit tired at times in front of an energetic crowd of 53,699 at the Rose Bowl.

Jesus scored an amazing goal in the 36th minute, marking the first time PSG has let one in since May 17. when they decisively defeated Atletico Madrid 4-0 last Sunday in Pasadena.

The French powerhouse has outscored its previous three opponents with a total of 12-0, securing both the French Cup and the Champions League final in the process.

Ballon d’Or candidate Ousmane Dembele was absent for his second consecutive match for PSG due to a quadriceps injury. Despite coach Luis Enrique making changes to his starting lineup, his teammates maintained control of possession during the first half.

Everything fell apart thanks to an incredible solo effort from Jesus, the Brazilian striker who is rumored to be heading to Nottingham Forest next season.

PSG had 16 shot attempts compared to Botafogo’s four but all of Botafogo’s shots were on target, while PSG only managed to get two on goal.

Jesus skillfully controlled a long pass from Jefferson Savarino, dodged two defenders, and blasted a shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma. He then jumped over a barrier and into the front row of the Rose Bowl stands to celebrate with the thrilled Botafogo fans.

PSG lacked the brilliant teamwork that had defined their impressive performance over the last month, but Enrique’s team is still in a good position to move forward as they head to Seattle on Monday to face Major League Soccer’s Sounders.

Thousands of enthusiastic Brazilian fans traveled to witness one of the most incredible wins in Botafogo’s rich history. The club will take on Atletico on Monday at the Rose Bowl, holding an unexpected chance to progress from this tough group.
