India’s daring wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant climbed to a career-best seventh place in the latest ICC Test rankings for batters on Wednesday (June 25, 2025), after scoring two centuries in the opening match of the series against England in Leeds.
India’s newly appointed Test captain, Shubman Gill, moved up five places to rank 20th overall after scoring a century in the first innings of a match that his team lost by five wickets, even after setting England a challenging target of 371.
Pant, who made history as just the second wicketkeeper to score two centuries in a single match during the first Test of the five-match series, advanced one position in the rankings.
Before the 27-year-old Pant came along, Andy Flower from Zimbabwe was the only wicketkeeper to score two centuries in a single Test match.
Pant scored 134 and 118 in the exciting Leeds Test, which England won by five wickets.
Not much shifted in the Test bowlers’ rankings, as India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah held onto his top spot after yet another impressive five-wicket haul in the Headingley Test.
In the meantime, Ben Duckett, named Player of the Match for his impressive scores of 62 and 149 in England’s win, climbed five spots to reach eighth place in the rankings.
Duckett’s fellow players, Ollie Pope who moved up three spots to 19th and Jamie Smith who jumped eight places to 27th, also saw some notable improvements.
England’s top player Joe Root continues to hold the position of the top-ranked Test batter, with his teammate Harry Brook being the nearest competitor.
England’s captain Ben Stokes climbed three spots to reach fifth place in the Test all-rounders ranking after making strong contributions with both bat and bowl in the same match.
