Pathum Nissanka scored his second consecutive test century, helping Sri Lanka reach a strong 290-2 after Bangladesh was dismissed for 247 on the second day of the second test on Thursday (June 26, 2025).

The opening batsman scored a flawless unbeaten 146 off 238 balls, hitting 18 fours, which came after his career-high score of 187 in the drawn first test at Galle last week.

Nissanka and Dinesh Chandimal really wore down the Bangladesh bowlers with their impressive 194-run partnership for the second wicket.

Chandimal was just seven runs shy of a century, sitting at 93 off 153 balls, when he attempted a reverse sweep against Nayeem Hasan and ended up gloving an easy catch to wicketkeeper Litton Das as the light began to fade. This marked the first time Chandimal was dismissed in the 90s.

Bangladesh squandered a review when they opted for an lbw referral against Prabath Jayasuriya, who will continue his innings on 5.

Nissanka and Lahiru Udara provided Sri Lanka with a rapid start of 88 runs before Taijul Islam made a breakthrough shortly after lunch. Udara scored a quick 40 runs off 65 balls but remained in his crease against the left-arm bowler’s straight delivery, leading to a successful review by Bangladesh.

Fast bowler Nahid Rana struggled with his accuracy during his brief spells, even though he consistently bowled at 144 kph. His strategy of using bouncers to challenge Nissanka and Chandimal didn’t work out either. Chandimal managed to successfully overturn an lbw decision when he was on 30.

Nissanka brought up his fourth test century with a boundary off Rana, driving it off the back foot just after tea. This marks his 11th score of 50 or more in his 18 test matches. Chandimal also started to find his rhythm late in the final session with some reverse sweeps. Both players effectively used their footwork against the spinners and capitalized on the loose deliveries from the fast bowlers.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh began at 220-8 and lost their last two wickets after adding another 27 runs.

On debut, left-arm spinner Sonal Dinusha recorded the best bowling figures for Sri Lanka with 3-22, while fast bowler Asitha Fernando finished with 3-51.
