Norway’s star player Ada Hegerberg guided her team to a thrilling 2-1 comeback win against the host nation Switzerland, even after she missed a penalty in their first match at the Women’s European Championship on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

The home team really took control in the first half and pulled ahead in the 28th minute when Nadine Riesen took advantage of some chaotic Norwegian defending to score off the left post.

Hegerberg leveled the score unexpectedly with a header from Vilde Boe Risa’s corner in the 54th minute, just four minutes before Switzerland’s Julia Stierli accidentally scored an own goal while attempting to block Caroline Graham Hansen’s cross meant for Hegerberg.

Norway player Hegerberg,the leading scorer in Women’s Champions League history. She missed her penalty by shooting it to the left of the post in the 70th minute after Geraldine Reuteler was called for a handball while attempting to defend against the Lyon star. The call was reversed following a VAR review due to an offside.

Earlier in the first half, Reuteler had sent the ball smashing off the crossbar for the dominant Swiss team.

“We had a serious discussion at half time. We hold ourselves to high standards in the team”, said Norway coach Gemma Grainger.

The Swiss team appeared heartbroken after the match, and so did their experienced coach Pia Sundhage, who had referred to this role as her “biggest challenge” before the game. Switzerland was aiming for only its second victory in seven games at a European Championship.

A lot of fans stuck around in their seats to give the team a round of applause afterward. The match took place at St. Jakob-Park, right across from where Austrian singer JJ snagged the Eurovision Song Contest title back in May. This stadium is the largest in Switzerland, holding up to 34,250 people for the tournament, and it’s set to host the final along with several other matches.
