The Indian women’s football team delivered another impressive show in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers, crushing Iraq 5-0 on Wednesday (July 2, 2025).

India was ahead 2-0 at the break. Goals in the first half by Sangita Basfore and Manisha set the stage, and a strong second half featured Karthika Angamuthu, Phanjoubam Nirmala Devi, and Nongmaithem Ratanbala Devi increasing the score, bringing India’s total to an impressive 22 goals over three matches, with no goals conceded.

India is leading Group B right now with nine points and a goal difference of +22.Thailand is in second place in the group with six points and is scheduled to play against Mongolia later today, setting the scene for an exciting clash between India and the host nation on Saturday.

On Wednesday, India, fresh off dominating victories against Mongolia (13-0) and Timor-Leste (4-0), were brimming with confidence and quickly made their presence felt.

Right from the start, India took charge and utilized the entire width of the pitch to stretch the Iraq defense. Their midfielders set the pace with smart passing and rapid transitions.

India nearly scored in the ninth minute from a corner that was flicked towards the goal, but Iraq’s goalkeeper Khalat Alzebari made an incredible save.

The Indian team kept up the pressure and found the back of the net just five minutes later. Sanju sent in a curling corner from the left, and although Alzebari rushed out, she couldn’t clear the ball. It landed perfectly for Sangita, who headed it in without hesitation to put India ahead.

India kept generating chances. In the 35th minute, Manisha unleashed a powerful shot from afar that hit the crossbar with a bang. However, just before halftime, the forward refused to be stopped.

In the 44th minute, she got the ball at the edge of the box, made a touch, and fired a low shot towards the goal.

What looked like a weak attempt somehow slipped through the Iraq defense and went under Alzebari, who was left unprepared.India leads the goal(2-0).

Iraq switched goalkeepers, bringing in Faeza Mahmood to replace Alzebari, but India kept the upper hand.

Just three minutes into the second half, Karthika Angamuthu delivered the highlight of the match.

Noticing the substitute keeper off her line, she executed a brilliant lob from over 25 yards that dipped perfectly into the net, much to the joy of her teammates.

The fourth goal came in the 68th minute from Nirmala Devi, who received a pass in midfield, advanced a few steps, and launched a long-range shot into the net.

The final goal of the day was scored in the 80th minute. Substitute Ratanbala Devi made a quick run into the box and had her first shot saved by Mahmood. However, she was quick to react, seizing the rebound to score and secure India’s third consecutive win of the campaign.
