“They haven’t really experienced the tough side of life, in a sense. No offense to them, they’re definitely the two best players right now, no doubt about it”, Grigor Dimitrov said on Saturday when asked about his upcoming opponent Jannik Sinner and the reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz.
On Monday night at Wimbledon’s Centre Court, things turned out in a way that nobody expected. Dimitrov had Sinner completely baffled, out of options and depth.
The 34-year-old delivered powerful serves and followed up with even more impressive shots from both sides.
In the first set, Sinner had a tough time dealing with the 34-year-old’s serve directed at his backhand, which led to a lot of effective one-two combinations.
The Bulgarian was ahead 6-3, 7-5, and it was tied 2-2 in the third set after two hours and eight minutes. The clock, the game play, and the intense shot making would come to a halt right there.
Instead of potentially scoring his first top-5 win since March of last year and his first ever against a World No. 1, he grabbed his chest with his left hand. He took a few steps, bent down, and sat on the grass. “My pec”, Dimitrov said to Sinner, pointing to his pectoral muscle, as the Italian approached the net.
Dimitrov then headed over to the sidelines, settled into his chair, and was attended to by a trainer and a doctor. After a short while, the 21st ranked player walked towards the locker room
with the medical staff. Shortly after, he came back out, nearly in tears, and mentioned that he couldn’t go on.
For the fifth Slam in a row, 34-year-old Dimitrov couldn’t finish a match. He also faced this issue at the Australian Open in January and the French Open in May, along with last year’s Wimbledon and US Open.

Interestingly, it was Dimitrov’s physical strength in his 20s that played a key role for him, even though he never secured those big titles. His sculpted physique and optimistic attitude were noticeable, even when his tennis skills seemed to vanish. This three-time major semifinalist, who reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2014, found himself let down by his own body yet again.
Even before he hit the court, fate’s harshness was hiding in the background. “I feel awesome. After three matches, being in this physical shape really gives me a positive and energetic vibe to go out there and play my game”, he mentioned after the third round.
“All I really want is to find myself in those kinds of situations, to get out there and compete against these guys right now. This is, in a sense, the most crucial thing for me”, he mentioned.
Sinner had sailed through to the fourth round without losing a set. He only gave away 17 games in total. Plus, the head-to-head record was also on Sinner’s side (4-1).
Sinner stumbled early, got broken in his opening game, and seemed to be hurrying his shots instead of controlling the points.

“I don’t see this as a victory, not at all”, Sinner mentioned, sharing that he had his own injury worries. “This is just a really unfortunate situation for all of us to see”,
Once more, it’s Dimitrov’s thoughtful remarks before the match that add a harsh twist to the reality of nearly pulling off the biggest upset of the year.
Honestly, this match doesn’t really impress me, with all due respect. It’s just another opportunity for me to showcase my skills.
The past six or seven months have been tough for me. I’ve put in a ton of effort and faced a lot of challenges.
This match holds personal significance for me more than anything else. But do I want to make it a bigger deal? Not really. I’m quite satisfied with it as it is.
The remaining part is all about enjoyment. This is crucial. We’re currently in the second week of Wimbledon. Let’s
enjoy ourselves. Sadly, that enjoyment only lasted for two hours and eight minutes before it was abruptly interrupted
by a situation we had encountered previously.
