Asian under-23 champion Sujeet Kalkal defeated several prominent competitors as he claimed the 65kg freestyle gold medal at the Ranking Series wrestling event held in Budapest.

Sujeet, who is also a bronze medallist at the Worlds under-23 in the 70kg category, took down Paris Olympics bronze medallist Albanian Islam Dudaev with a score of 11-0 in the first round.

He then defeated European silver medallist Frenchman Khamzat Arsamerzouev 11-0 in the quarterfinals, and in the semifinals, he triumphed over two-time Olympian and 2023 World championships bronze medallist Armenian Vazgen Tevanyan with a score of 6-1.

In the final match, the 22-year-old Indian, who suffered a Grade-3 ligament tear in his ankle during the senior Asian championships back in March, triumphed over European bronze medallist Ali Rahimzade from Azerbaijan with a score of 5-1.

This victory earned him his second gold medal, following his win at the Asian under-23 title just about three weeks prior. This marks Sujeet’s second Ranking Series gold, the first being in Tunisia three years ago.

Meanwhile, Rahul (57kg) secured the bronze by defeating the 2023 European under-23 champion, German Niklas Stechele, with a score of 4-0.
