Marvel is planning to recast some characters in the new X-Men franchise, including Tony Stark, a role that became closely associated with Robert Downey Jr. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, has announced that they will be recasting the actors after the happenings in Avengers Secret Wars, which is set to come out in December 2027.

A bunch of actors from the earlier X-Men movies, like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Kelsey Grammer, are coming back to reprise their roles in ‘Avengers Doomsday’. It’s set to hit theaters in 2026.

Feige stated that the MCU’s first X-Men film, which will be helmed by Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier, will serve as a “reset,” rather than a “reboot” of the MCU.

“Reboot is a daunting term. Reboot can signify many things to different people. Reset, one timeline that’s the direction we’re considering. X-Men is where that will unfold next”, he added.

Endgame was all about endings. Secret Wars is focused on new beginnings.

He mentioned that Amazon MGM’s film producers are on the lookout for new actors to take on the roles of James Bond and the recently released Superman, as he talked about replacements.

Feige brought up actors Downey Jr and Chris Evans, who have stepped away from their MCU roles, noting that it can be tough to find someone to fill the shoes of an actor who has done such impressive work, but it’s not out of the question. Downey Jr’s Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, meets his end at the conclusion of Avengers Endgame, while Captain America opts for retirement.

“I think it’s tough for anyone to step in when an actor has delivered such an incredible performance”, he remarked.
