After more than sixty years of operation, the Indian Air Force is getting ready to officially retire its final MiG-21 Bison jets.

A high ranking Defence official has confirmed that the jets are set to be retired this September, with a ceremonial send off planned at the Chandigarh air base. This marks the end of a 62 year journey that started back in 1963.

The MIG 21 jets are currently in use by the 23 Squadron, which is also called the Panthers.

These jets have been involved in several significant conflicts, including the wars with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971, the Kargil conflict in 1999, the Balakot airstrikes in 2019, and most recently, Operation Sindoor.

During the Balakot airstrikes, a MiG-21 Bison was piloted by then Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman.
