India’s leading men’s singles player, Lakshya Sen, made it to the semi finals for the first time this season in 2025 after defeating his highly rated fellow countryman Ayush Shetty in an intense three game match at the Hong Kong Open on Friday, September 12.

Lakshya managed to outlast the 20 year old, who had been on a fantastic streak in the Super 500 tournament, having taken down World No. 7 Kodai Naraoka in the pre quarterfinals.

Even though he lost 16-21, 21-17, 13-21, Shetty really held his own, pushing Lakshya to the edge in this showdown of Prakash Padukone Academy alumni.

After losing the first game, Ayush didn’t back down, making it to a deciding game before he ran out of steam and energy towards the end of a match that lasted an hour and six minutes.

Even though it was an all Indian quarter final, Lakshya and Ayush really captivated the fans who were watching.

Both players went for aggressive strategies, but Lakshya’s strong defense and better control at the net made all the difference in this intense match.

Lakshya faced a challenge in his Round of 16 match, narrowly beating his senior teammate HS Prannoy in three games.

Ayush is definitely going to gain confidence from his Hong Kong campaign. The 20 year old from Mangalore has become one of the most promising Indian badminton players in 2025.

Lakshya, on the flip side, will find a lot of motivation from his journey to the Hong Kong semi final, especially after his early exit from the World Championships in August.

The Indian No. 1 is gearing up to face the winner of the quarter final match between third seed Chou Tien Chen and Aiwi Farhan in Saturday’s semi final.
