Gaet’ale Pond, a tiny water body that boasts the impressive title of the saltiest lake on the planet.

The salt content of the lake is an astonishing 43.3 percent by weight.

The Dead Sea and Antarctica’s Don Juan Pond were salty, Gaet’ale easily outdoes these hypersaline lakes.

The Guinness World Records recognizes Gaet’ale Pond in Ethiopia’s Afar Region as the saltiest body of water on the planet.

With a salinity of 43.3 percent, it surpasses Don Juan Pond in Antarctica, which has a salinity of 40.2 percent, and leaves the Dead Sea’s 23.1 percent in the dust.

Gaet’ale Pond’s hypersaline waters, rich in magnesium chloride and calcium chloride, create such an extreme environment that most life forms can’t survive there.

Gaet’ale Pond is truly mesmerizing.
Located in the Danakil Depression – one of the hottest and lowest spots on Earth at 120 meters below sea level – it feels like you’re on another planet.

The landscape goes on forever with salt flats in all sorts of shapes and sizes, dotted with volcanic craters and hydrothermal springs.

The air is filled with a strong scent of sulphur, which unmistakably reminds you of rotten eggs. Combine that with the unyielding heat, and the whole experience becomes even more surreal.

Gaet’ale Pond is one of the many small water bodies located near the Dallol Spring.

It was formed by a hot spring that has no inlet or outlet streams, which results in significant evaporation and salt buildup.

While Gaet’ale is rich in salt, its size is quite small, spanning only 0.03 square kilometers.

The almost nonexistent rainfall is a key factor contributing to its limited surface area.

The pond is completely uninhabitable for fish and other life forms, certain microbes like halophiles not only thrive here but also establish a unique ecosystem that caters specifically to them.

Additionally, Gaet’ale’s extreme remoteness and harsh conditions make it unsuitable for recreational activities, turning it into a natural spectacle to admire rather than to engage with – a rare and significant marvel of nature and geology.
